It is important to encourage others to be socially responsible through actions, behavior, and by providing examples. Our Park Plaza Histria is the first hotel on the Adriatic that was participating in a pilot project leading to sustainable waste management.

Entitled "Reduce food waste, cook for your guests", the project was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and the Faculty of Geotechnics at the University of Zagreb. It was implemented at the start of July 2021 when hotel employees conducted sampling and measurement of food waste generated. The results are obtained as important guidance for future waste reduction.

The method chosen involves three containers for three sources of waste: food and food storage, food preparation and serving, and after consumption or "waste from the plate". Measures were performed over a period of 7 days, and according to the obtained results, one of the basic principles of sustainable waste management is the waste hierarchy. It also shows that the best method of reducing the amount of food waste is to avoid generating it. 

Based on the analysis of the received data, recommendations for hotels are focusing on precise planning of food orders, giving better attention when serving them, making efforts to procure food that results in less waste, and conducting continuous education of employees.   

The role of the hotel industry in waste production is more than significant. Arena Hospitality Group is the first domestic hospitality company that recognized its business sector as relevant for analysis. Director of Marketing and Sales and member of the Management Board of Arena Hospitality Group, Manuela Kraljević, and Director of the Histria Hotel Tomislav Korošec expressed their satisfaction at the beginning of the project.
